Rationale:
Critically ill patients with respiratory failure may require invasive mechanical ventilation. Some of these patients will need prolonged ventilation, which usually provided thorough tracheostomy. Percutaneous procedures are a new option for patients to have minimally invasive procedures. Bronchoscopically guided percutaneous tracheostomy offers a bedside procedure for critically ill patients and eliminates the need for transport to an operating room, and is associated with a higher morbidity and mortality. In addition, there is a cost saving and more accurate technique to reduce complications such as stoma infections when compared to current open techniques for tracheostomy.
